15th-28th March: 'Desire' Art Exhibition by XTRA.art

For two weeks only from 15th till 28th March2017, Xtra.art is presenting their latest art show 'Desire' to London audience at The Underdog Gallery. Private View with Live Performances: Friday 17th March 6pm- 8pm (please register here to attend) Exhibition (open to the public): Wednesday 15th - Tuesday 28th Attendance is free, open every day apart from Mondays. Xtra.art is a slough-based collective of creatively and culturally diverse young artists, curating and producing mixed media artwork, film, spoken word, fashion and music. The show investigates the subject of our desires. As human beings, we live in two modes of existence. One is trivial, superficial - and takes up most of the forefront of our waking mind. The deadline for an assignment, the car that won't start and the to-do list that only grows seem like the only needs we seem to meet. But the other mode of existence - the one that quietly desires more; desires home, and love, and belonging - is never non-existent. Ignoring this more subversive mode of existence seems possible and necessary in the daily scurry from mishap to headache, but doing so only leads to unhappiness. As human beings, we were made to desire. From starry-eyed childhood wonder at the Universe to starry-eyed boardroom ambitions, our desires fuel us through life, even when we are running on fumes. Ambition. Home. Love. These are some of the most evocative words in the English language. They catch at the flaps of our imagination because they bring out the needs we will never be rid of. The hopes for the future, the need for a lover's arms, the safety of a childhood bedroom. These fragments of our own histories lie embedded in our mind, in those places that perhaps we don't always have the words or the ways to reach. When we fall in love, when we come home, we unearth these fragments. And when these desires explode into acknowledged existence, they colour our lives with a boldness that we never even knew we missed. The artwork in this exhibition is an attempt at that naked, earned unearthing, and what is seen here is the boldness and the colour that has sprung forth. The exhibition will include the following artists and the themes of 'Desire' they are working with: Maneet Gulati: desire for peace, desire to be free Krishan Sharda: desire to know oneself Faaiza Malik: unfulfilled desire, desire to be free from fear, desire to escape confinement Sandra Maciuszek: desire to be seen, desire to show the truth Ria Walia: desire to be pure Morissette Gernale: desire for tranquility, desire to escape Rukhsaar Malik: desire for release Damayanti Chatterjee: desire for familiarity, desire to be known, desire for understanding, desire for the strength to let go, desire to find home Theophina Gabriel: desire for truth, desire for love, desire to reconnect with nature, desire to be noticed, desire to let go
